Coach and economy class compared

Is coach the same as economy?

Yes. Coach, economy and main cabin are three names for the same cabin, the lowest-priced cabin on a commercial flight. "Coach" is the word most often used in the US; "economy" is the term used worldwide. Basic economy is not a separate cabin. It is a cheaper fare for the same seats, with fewer extras.

So "flying coach" means flying in economy. Airlines also give the cabin their own names: Delta calls it Delta Main, and United calls it United Economy. Seat size, food and bag rules vary by airline and by fare, not by whether your ticket says coach or economy.

On the ticket, the cabin appears as a one-letter booking class. Full-fare economy is usually booked in class Y. Your ticket may show a different letter; our guide to the fare basis code explains how to read it.

What an economy class ticket includes

What an economy class ticket includes

Every economy ticket gets you a seat with a tray table. What else is included depends on the airline, the route and the fare you buy:

  • Personal item: almost always free. For packing advice, see our cabin baggage and personal items guide.
  • Full-size carry-on: included on standard economy fares at most full-service airlines. United Basic Economy does not include one on most routes, and low-cost carriers usually charge for it.
  • Checked bags: on US domestic flights a checked bag usually costs extra. Many international long-haul economy fares include one or two bags. See the airlines that include a free checked bag.
  • Seat choice: on standard fares you can usually pick a standard seat when you book. On basic fares the airline usually assigns your seat at check-in (see the fares section below).
  • Snacks, drinks and meals: these depend on the airline and the flight length. Many long-haul flights include complimentary meals, while budget airlines may charge. Delta, for example, serves complimentary snacks and drinks in Delta Main on flights of 350 miles and over.
  • Entertainment: in-flight entertainment or streaming on select airlines.

Economy seat pitch and width by airline

Economy seat pitch and width by airline

Most US domestic economy seats have 30 to 31 inches of pitch, the usual measure of legroom. Some low-cost carriers go down to 28 inches, and the best long-haul economy cabins offer 32 to 34. Economy seats are about 17 to 18.5 inches wide.

Figures differ by aircraft, so check the seat map for your flight.

There is no US federal minimum for economy seat pitch or width. Congress told the FAA to set one in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, but as of October 2026 the FAA's only step is a request for comments published on August 3, 2022. No proposed or final rule has followed. For more cabin facts on each airline, see our airline quality scores.

Economy and premium economy seats compared

Economy vs premium economy

Premium economy is a step up from economy: a wider seat with more legroom, at a higher price. Delta's Airbus A350-900 shows the size of the step, because it carries economy, extra-legroom economy and premium economy on the same aircraft (figures from Delta):

Cabin on Delta's A350-900Seat widthSeat pitch
Delta Main (economy)17.4 in31 to 32 in
Delta Comfort (extra-legroom economy)17.4 in34 in
Delta Premium Select (premium economy)18.5 in38 in

On this aircraft, Premium Select gives you 6 to 7 more inches of legroom than Main and 1.1 more inches of width. Delta Comfort sits in between, with the same width as Main and 2 to 3 more inches of legroom. Delta's A330-900neo follows the same pattern: Main is 18 inches wide with 31 to 33 inches of pitch, Comfort is 18 inches with 34, and Premium Select is 18.5 inches with 38.

Premium economy is most worth the higher price on long overnight flights, when you want to sleep and the extra room counts for many hours. On a short daytime flight, plain economy is usually the better buy, and an extra-legroom seat such as Delta Comfort adds legroom without a change of cabin. "Premium" amenities vary widely, so compare what each airline includes before you pay more. Above premium economy, Delta's A350-900 has Delta One, a flat bed; that is business class.

Basic economy vs main cabin: the fares inside economy

Airlines sell several fares for the same economy seats. The cheapest, usually called basic economy, costs less because it takes things away: seat choice, a full-size carry-on, changes, refunds or miles, depending on the airline. The seat itself is the same.

At Delta, the economy cabin, Delta Main, is sold as three fares:

Delta Main fareMiles earnedIf you cancel
Delta Main Basic (formerly Basic Economy)NoneAllowed only for a fee
Delta Main Classic5 miles per $1eCredit
Delta Main Extra7 miles per $1Refund to your original form of payment

Main Basic passengers board in Zone 8, and their seat is assigned after check-in. Otherwise the onboard experience is the same on all three fares.

Other airlines draw the line in different places:

  • United Basic Economy: you may bring a personal item but not a full-size carry-on on most routes. If you bring a carry-on to the gate, it is checked and you pay the checked-bag fee.
  • Southwest Basic: Southwest now assigns seats on every flight. Basic fares get a standard seat at check-in, while Choice fares can pick a standard seat when booking.

Before you buy a basic fare, check four things in the fare rules: when you get your seat, whether a full-size carry-on is included, what a change or cancellation costs, and whether the fare earns miles.

One rule covers every fare, basic economy included. Under the US DOT refund rule, fully in effect since October 28, 2024, the airline must give you an automatic cash refund if it cancels or significantly changes your flight and you decline the alternative. A significant change includes a schedule change of more than 3 hours on a domestic flight or 6 hours on an international one, a different airport, more connections, or a downgrade to a lower class.

Tips for a more comfortable economy flight

How to make a long economy flight more comfortable

  • Choose your seat early. Aisle and exit-row seats offer more space and easier access. A paid extra-legroom row adds a few inches: on Delta's 737-800, Delta Comfort has 33 to 34 inches of pitch against 31 in Delta Main.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes and pack layers, because the cabin temperature changes during the flight.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle and protein-rich snacks.
  • To sleep, bring a travel pillow, an eye mask, a blanket and noise-canceling headphones.
  • Load your own entertainment: podcasts, downloaded Netflix episodes or ebooks.

Get up and move on long flights. The CDC says flights longer than 4 hours can raise the risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), although the risk is generally very small. The CDC advises moving your legs often, walking around every 1 to 2 hours, and asking a doctor before you travel if you are at higher risk. This is the condition often nicknamed "economy class syndrome".

Some airlines now let economy passengers lie down. Air New Zealand has two options, Skycouch and Skynest; see our page on beds in economy on Air New Zealand. United announced the United Relax Row on March 24, 2026: a three-seat United Economy row that turns into a flat, couch-like space. It launches in 2027 on Boeing 787s and 777s, with up to 12 per aircraft, and United plans to have it on 200+ aircraft by 2030.

Questions about economy class travel

Economy class FAQs

Is coach better than economy?

No. Coach and economy are the same cabin, so neither is better. What changes your trip is the airline and the fare you buy, such as basic economy or a standard fare.

Do economy tickets include meals?

It depends on the airline and the flight length. Many long-haul flights include complimentary meals, while budget airlines may charge. Delta, for example, serves complimentary snacks and drinks in Delta Main on flights of 350 miles and over.

Can I choose my seat in economy?

Usually, on a standard fare: you can pick a standard seat when you book, and extra-legroom and exit-row seats cost more. On basic economy fares such as Delta Main Basic and Southwest Basic, the airline assigns your seat at check-in unless you pay to choose.

Are checked bags free in economy?

Usually not on US domestic flights. Southwest, for example, charges $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second, one-way, on tickets booked from April 9, 2026, unless the fare is Choice Extra, which includes two free bags. Many international long-haul economy fares include one or two bags.

What does Y mean on an economy ticket?

Y is the booking class usually used for full-fare economy. Other letters on your ticket are explained in our fare basis code guide.

Can I get a refund on a basic economy ticket?

It depends on who cancels. If you cancel, the fare rules apply: Delta Main Basic, for example, can be cancelled only for a fee. If the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight and you decline the alternative, the US DOT rule entitles you to an automatic cash refund, whatever the fare.

Is there a minimum economy seat size?

Not in the US. Congress told the FAA to set one in 2018, but the FAA has only asked for comments (August 2022). The FAA's evacuation study, run with able-bodied adults under 60, found that seat size did not affect evacuation time. A National Academies peer review said the study "provides some potentially useful data but not the information" the FAA would need to decide whether seat regulations are warranted.

How do I make economy class more comfortable?

Choose an aisle or exit-row seat early, dress in layers, bring water, a pillow and an eye mask, and on flights longer than 4 hours get up and walk around every 1 to 2 hours. Consider paying for an extra-legroom seat when you book.
