Payment plans for flights: book now, pay later with Laters

Book now, pay later: how a flight payment plan works

A payment plan splits your fare into smaller payments. You choose the flight first, then pick a payment provider at Laters checkout. Most plans take the first installment, usually 25% of the fare, at checkout. You pay the rest on the provider's schedule: every two weeks on a Pay in 4 plan, or every month on a longer plan.

Laters charges a $0 booking fee and adds no surcharge when you pay with a plan. The provider sets the terms, decides whether to approve you and collects the repayments. Approval is not guaranteed.

You choose the plan at Laters checkout, not on the airline's website. That means the same plans are available whichever of the 650+ airlines you fly, including airlines that do not offer buy now, pay later themselves.

What a flight payment plan is

What a flight payment plan is

A flight payment plan, also called buy now, pay later (BNPL) for flights, comes in four main types:

  • Pay in 4: four payments over six weeks, usually 25% at checkout and the rest every two weeks.
  • Pay in 3: three payments, the first at checkout.
  • Monthly plans: fixed monthly payments over several months. These can carry interest.
  • Pay later in one payment: nothing is split; the full amount is due on a later date.

Pay in 4 and Pay in 3 plans are interest-free when you pay on time, but a late fee can apply if you miss a payment. Monthly plans can carry interest: Afterpay Pay Monthly and Klarna US financing charge 0.00% to 35.99% APR, Affirm charges 0% to 36% APR in the US based on your credit, and BillEase sets interest at approval.

Paying for a flight with Afterpay through Laters

Pay in installments on airlines that don't offer it

Most airlines do not take buy now, pay later at their own checkout. In the US, Delta, American Airlines and United do not offer Afterpay. When you book their flights through Laters, Afterpay is available at checkout. American Airlines does accept Affirm on aa.com for flights and seats.

Laters adds the payment plan at checkout, so you can fly now, pay later on 650+ airlines, from budget carriers to full-service airlines, on any route and in any fare class.

Ways to pay in full at checkout, no instalments

Not every option at Laters checkout splits your fare into a plan. A few charge the full amount immediately instead of a card, with no instalments, interest or late fee:

  • PayNow: an instant QR-code bank transfer for Singapore-based customers, settled the same day in SGD. No credit is extended, so there is no APR or late fee.
  • Paysquad: a New Zealand and Australia group-pay option where several people split one order's total at checkout; the booking confirms once the group has covered 100%. It is not a loan or a deferred payment, so no APR applies while a Squad is funding on time.
  • Jkopay: a Taiwanese wallet that charges the full fare immediately from the JKO balance, a linked bank account or a bound card. Jkopay publishes no instalment plan of its own.

Naver Pay lists a Pay Now and a Pay Monthly option across several countries, but Laters checkout does not yet accept Naver Pay as a payment method.

Who can use a flight payment plan

Who can use a payment plan, and who runs a credit check

You can usually use a flight payment plan if you:

  • Are 18 or older (21 or older for Grab in Malaysia)
  • Live in a country the provider serves (residency rules vary by provider and market)
  • Have a valid ID and payment method
  • Choose a participating provider during checkout

The provider decides approval at checkout. Credit checks differ by provider:

  • Afterpay Pay in 4: no credit check
  • Afterpay Pay Monthly (US): soft credit check
  • Klarna Pay in 4: soft check that does not affect your credit score
  • Klarna US financing: soft credit check
  • Affirm, Clearpay, Zip, Atome, Tabby and Grab: a credit or eligibility check

Most Pay in 4 plans (Afterpay, Klarna, Clearpay, Zip and Tabby) take 25% of the fare at checkout. There is no upfront fee, but there is an upfront payment. Affirm may ask for a down payment.
