Originally established in 2006 as Enerjet, the airline focused on charter operations, primarily serving Canada's oil sands industry. In November 2021, Enerjet rebranded as Lynx Air, signaling a strategic shift towards the ULCC market. The rebranding aimed to fill a perceived gap in the Canadian aviation sector by providing budget-friendly travel options. Lynx Air commenced its first flights in April 2022, operating a fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
Operational Challenges and Market Dynamics
The Canadian aviation market is known for its competitiveness and high operational costs. Lynx Air faced several hurdles, including escalating fuel prices, increasing airport charges, and a challenging economic and regulatory environment. These factors, coupled with stiff competition from established carriers, made it difficult for Lynx Air to maintain profitability.
Cessation of Operations
On February 22, 2024, Lynx Air announced it would cease operations, with the final flights scheduled for February 25, 2024. The airline filed for creditor protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), citing financial pressures as the primary reason for its shutdown. In an internal memo, interim CEO Jim Sullivan expressed disappointment, acknowledging the efforts made to build the brand and expand into new markets, but ultimately conceding that the financial challenges were insurmountable.
